What ever became of the Japanese Moon Survey that was going to take close up Pictures of the Moon's Surface?

I remember in 2004 that the Japanese were going to send a Probe to Survey the Moon and get some of the supposed best close ups of the surface. Did this probe ever launch or was the mission scrubbed do to US pressure as it might find no trace of a Moon Landing? Or has it done it's Survey and nothing exciting or has it been Hush Hushed?
